HARARE, Oct. 13 (AIA\GIN) -- Against a background of looming
power shortages, Zimbabwe is forging ahead with a Z$10 billion
($1.2 billion) investment to meet electricity needs for the next
two decades.
The project is considered urgent because generating capacity has
dropped at Kariba Dam as the Zambezi River water level has dropped
in the present drought -- the second worst in 15 years.
The national power authority, Zesa, says the investment is
necessary even without the drought, because there is increased
demand for power in the domestic and industrial sectors, to service
new infrastructure and to refurbish ageing power stations.
