HANOI, Oct. 24 (IPS) -- Before daybreak every day, hundreds of
migrants from the rural areas set off for the Vietnamese capital
in search of work -- from the hawking of goods to shoe shining and
garbage collection.
They provide entrepreneurs with a cheap pool of labor which is
fuelling much of Hanoi's recent economic development. But at the
same time, many who fail to get the odd job end up in crime,
prostitution or begging on the streets.
Vietnam's farmers, like those across Asia, are lured to the city
by the industrial boom and the increasing difficulty of making a
living in the countryside.
