THE HAGUE, Oct. 30 (IPS) -- The International Court of Justice
here began unprecedented hearings today into a basic question never
before raised at such a level -- the very legality of nuclear
weapons.
Lawyers for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the General
Assembly of the United Nations, in arguments to a special session
of the court, attempted to place nuclear weapons in the same
category as chemical and biological weapons (and warfare), and to
obtain a ban on their use.
Their opening arguments advanced humanitarian and environmental
reasons for imposing the ban.
