SAN SALVADOR, Nov. 26 (IPS) -- Despite government claims to the
contrary, drug trafficking and money laundering activities are rife
in El Salvador, according to experts who have studied the problem.
"It can't be that in this country there is no money laundering
or drug trafficking going on -- like the government says," declares
Carlos Aviles, a local researcher. Too many important personalities
were being arrested for involvement in illicit activities, he told
IPS in an interview.
Aviles is among local experts demanding an investigation into
El Salvador's financial system on grounds that it is being used as
a conduit for "dirty" ...
