JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 15 (IPS) -- South Africa's already embattled
department of foreign affairs is again being tested as the United
States puts pressure on Pretoria to drop a proposed arms sale to
Syria.
Initial reports from Pretoria over the weekend said that the
cabinet was finalizing a decision to sanction the sale of a $660
million electronic sighting system for tanks to Syria, a country
Washington considers a supporter of international terrorism.
Since then, however, there have been conflicting statements from
several government officials, the latest being that there was no
contract to sell weapons to the Middle Eastern nation.
