HONG KONG, Feb. 21 (IPS) -- Uncertainty about the reversion of
Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty has kept Hong Kong residents
nervous and the death of Deng Xiaoping has further heightened this
anxiety.
The death of Deng on Feb. 19, four months before the British
colony is handed over to China, has stirred fear that any
instability in China caused by a possible power vacuum would spill
over into Hong Kong and affect a smooth transition.
Although President Jiang Zemin, Deng's hand-picked successor,
is firmly ensconced, some do not discount challenges from
