PORTLAND Halfway through a stop-and-go trip on Tri-Mets nearly completed westside MAX line Wednesday, a group of Clark County officials heard this announcement:
Ladies and gentlemen, Mayor Pollard is now at the controls of the train. Anyone who wants to leave may do so now.
It was no April Fools joke.
With directions from 12-year veteran MAX operator Ron Callahan, Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard, and, later, Vancouver Councilwoman Rose Besserman, drove $5 million worth of new light rail equipment through the 3-mile tunnel beneath Portlands west hills.
