In the early part of the 20th century, Britain was the dominant Western
influence in the Middle East. The imperial presence was particularly
felt in Iraq, where during those years an Englishwoman named Gertrude
Bell worked for the British government. She was considered by some
to be the most powerful woman in the British empire. Though now largely
