WA: Broome considers fees for 4WDs on Cable Beach

PERTH, Sept 5 AAP - Just days after Paul Keating referred to them as a "pox on cities", the resort town of Broome is considering imposing fees for 4WDs to access the world-famous Cable Beach.

In an effort to curb environmental damage and preserve the beach' s heritage, the Broome Shire Council has proposed the introduction of a toll for those wishing to drive across the beach, with access controlled via a boom gate.

The proposal comes after mounting pressure from Aboriginal and environmental groups, concerned that sand dunes were being eroded and the cultural integrity of the beach ...
