The first battle in America's new war against terrorism most likely
took place on September 11th in the brilliant blue sky over Somerset
County, Pennsylvania. Passengers on United Flight 93 from Newark
to San Francisco apparently attacked four al-Qaeda hijackers who had
seized control of the Boeing jet and were steering it toward Washington,
DC. During the struggle, the plane plunged to the ground in an open
field near the tiny town of Shanksville. On a recent visit to Somerset
