This is MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Renee Montagne.
Affordable housing is a big issue. The federal government says affordable
means a family spends no more than 30 percent of its income on rent
or mortgage. In the suburbs of New Jersey, housing is so expensive
that many people must commute from Pennsylvania, and one-third of
New Jersey residents live in overcrowded housing. For 20 years, the
state has had rules to encourage towns to have affordable housing.
