INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

The International Space Station (ISS) is being built by 16 countries, including the U.S. and Russia. By the time it is completed in 2004, more than 40 space missions—carrying crews and supplies—will have been flown there. The first crew of three astronauts lived and worked aboard the ISS for about four months starting in October 2000. The fourth crew was scheduled to return to Earth at the end of May 2002, after almost six months in space. A fifth ISS crew was slated to follow immediately, with a sixth going up in September.
