EAST BRUNSWICK - Several Air Force fighter jets were assigned to follow
a single-engine airplane that strayed into restricted airspace Friday,
authorities said.
The Piper Cherokee was owned by a Long Island flying club, and ventured
into the 30-mile restricted area around New York City that is closed
to noncommercial aircraft, said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal
Aviation Administration.
Canadian Army Maj. Douglas Martin, a spokesman for the North American
