BOB EDWARDS, host:
After a summer when many Americans were wearied by threats of another
baseball strike, even sports commentator Frank Deford needs a departure
from it all. His new novel, "An American Summer," is about a friendship
between a teen-age boy and a young woman with polio.
FRANK DEFORD (Author, "An American Summer"): People think of me as
old grouch and curmudgeon and all that sort of thing, but this is
the tender side of Frank Deford and also the nostalgic side of Frank
Deford.
