Dateline: NAIROBI, Kenya Kenya's main opposition alliance chose its presidential candidate Wednesday after many months of public doubt about whether Kenya's main opposition parties would unite to break the ruling party's 39- year hold on power.

The leader of the official opposition in parliament, Mwai Kibaki, was nominated as the National Alliance Party of Kenya presidential candidate. His running mate is the chairman of the FORD-Kenya opposition party, Kijana Wamalwa.

Charity Ngilu, who came fifth in the 1997 presidential election making her Kenya's most successful woman presidential candidate, was nominated as the alliance's prime ministerial candidate.
