Swiss voters Sunday rejected sharing the windfall of a multibillion-
dollar gold sale with people in extreme need abroad. The chief opponent,
nationalist politician Christoph Blocher, said the referendum proved
the Swiss were immune to foreign blackmail.
Although vote totals were not immediately available, it was clear
from regional returns that the measure had received majority backing
in only a few locations.
Swiss television Projections based on exit polls said about 52 percent
turned down a government plan to spend the interest from the sales
of "excess" gold in three ways _ one-third to the Swiss social security
