Venezuela backs down on Central Bank

CARACAS, Venezuela, Sep 24, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Venezuela's National Assembly, in a surprise decision, shelved proposals to carry out a major reform of the statutes governing the country's Central Bank.

Critics said the proposed reforms threatened the Central Bank's independent status.

The reform package would have obliged the Central Bank to calculate its profits every six months rather than every year and to make interim and advance transfers to the government.
