Venezuela backs down on Central Bank

-- Venezuela's National Assembly, in a surprise decision, shelved
proposals to carry out a major reform of the statutes governing the
country's Central Bank.
Critics said the proposed reforms threatened the Central Bank's independent
status.
The reform package would have obliged the Central Bank to calculate
its profits every six months rather than every year and to make interim
and advance transfers to the government.
The reforms would have also removed the Central Bank's responsibility
for publishing statistics relating to the consumer price index and ...
