GENEVA (AP) _ Swiss voters rejected sharing the windfall of a multibillion- dollar gold sale with the needy, and the chief opponent said the referendum proved the Swiss were immune to foreign blackmail.

Although vote totals were not immediately available, regional returns showed that the measure received majority backing in only a few locations.

About 52 percent turned down a government plan to spend the interest from the sales of "excess" gold in three ways _ one-third to the Swiss social security program, a third to regional governments and a third to people in need at home or abroad, Swiss TV projections based on exit polls said.
