BOX: De La Hoya TKOs Vargas to retain WBC belt

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, Sept 14 AFP - Oscar De La Hoya retained his World Boxing Council title with a technical knockout of Fernando Vargas in the 11th round of a double-title fight tonight.

"It feels great. All the talk he was doing I just got fed up with it," said De La Hoya, who also captures Vargas' 154-pound World Boxing Association title.

"He talked a lot of stuff about me and I didn't like that so I had to show him a lesson."

De La Hoya finished the fight off halfway through the 11th round by landing blow after blow to Vargas' head after trapping Vargas in the corner.
