Hurricane Lili began dumping heavy rains on western Cuba early Tuesday
and 127,000 people were asked to leave their homes in fear of the
storm that ripped roofs from apartment buildings in the wealthy Cayman
Islands and left seven dead in Jamaica and St. Vincent.
Lili was picking up speed and its violent winds were gaining strength
as it approached Cuba, whipping up battering waves and storm surges
up to 10 feet (3 meters) higher than normal, the U.S. National Hurricane
Center in Miami warned.
On the island, government radio stations announced that school classes
in western Pinar del Rio province and the capital of Havana were canceled.
