Hoping to turn around a police force scarred by scandal and low morale,
Mayor James Hahn has chosen as its chief the man who presided over
New York City's stunning drop in crime in the mid-1990s.
The selection of former New York Police Commissioner William Bratton
was to be announced Thursday, city officials said. The appointment
must still be confirmed by the City Council.
Bratton was chosen over former Philadelphia Police Commissioner John
Timoney and Oxnard Police Chief Art Lopez, a former Los Angeles Police
Department veteran.
