New Jersey's crime rate jumped by 3 percent last year, ending a steady five-year decline that saw criminal activity drop to its lowest levels in nearly 30 years, according to an annual report released Friday.

The report, compiled by the state police, detailed a 16 percent increase in overall crime in Passaic County in 2001, the highest spike in New Jersey. Violent crimes in the county rose 10 percent, and non-violent crimes increased 17 percent.
