Today, the second part of a series, The Mideast: A Century of Conflict
Between Palestine and Israel, picks up two decades after Theodor Herzl
and the early Zionists, in 1897, launched the movement to establish
a Jewish homeland. It took that long--20 years--for the first great
diplomatic breakthrough, the Balfour Declaration, in which Britain
declared itself in favor of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Britain
