Dateline: OSWIECIM, Poland It was the first time Avi Goldman, a son of Holocaust survivors, had visited Auschwitz. But he was here not just to grieve, but also to celebrate.

Goldman joined a group of American Jews who presented a Torah scroll Thursday to a century-old synagogue that was reopened two years ago near the site of the Nazi death camp.

"It's a historic event," said Goldman, 55, from Cleveland, Ohio. " My father never wanted to come here because of what happened to him, but I have made a commitment to revival of Jewish life here."
