The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Friday to end a travel
ban on Angola's UNITA rebels and authorized an assessment of the political
situation in the country so it could review and possibly lift other
sanctions against the rebels.
The council suspended the travel ban against the rebels in May, a
month after UNITA and the government signed a cease-fire agreement.
The resolution said the travel ban "shall cease to have effect" on
Nov. 14 when the current suspension expires.
Three previous peace deals brought only brief pauses in Africa's longest-
running civil war, which began after Angola's 1975 independence from
Portugal. But ...
