Stem cells from cord blood show promise

SEATTLE, Oct 22, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Scientists said Tuesday they can increase the number of stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood significantly by exposing the blood to a particular molecule, a finding that could have important implications for stem cell research.

Dr. Irwin Bernstein, a pediatric oncologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington, both in Seattle, led a research team to determine how best to utilize stem cells that can be derived from umbilical cord blood.

To do so, they exposed cord blood in the laboratory to a protein molecule called Delta-1. ...
