WA: More older people living alone, 2001 census reveals

PERTH, Oct 28 AAP - More older people are now living alone than
ever before, with Hobart
having the most number of independent dwellers in the nation.
The trend is shown in statistics compiled during last year's census,
released today
in social atlases for Sydney, Perth and Hobart.
The figures show more people were living by themselves, with Hobart
having the highest
proportion - 12 per cent - of people living alone of all capital cities.
Of those, 38 per cent were 65 years or older.
Sydney had the second lowest proportion, after Darwin, of people
living alone - 266,000
