Secretary-General Kofi Annan dismissed the Iraqi parliament's opposition
to the tough new U.N. resolution and said Tuesday that he hopes the
government will accept the Security Council's plan to resume U.N.
weapons inspections.
"I'm waiting for a formal response from the government," Annan told
a news conference. "I don't think the Iraqi parliament was talking
to me. I think it was addressed to the people of Iraq."
The secretary-general said the Security Council's decision was unanimous,
it was endorsed by the Arab League this weekend, and "I hope the
message will get through" that Iraq is expected to comply and ...
