MELBOURNE, Nov 20 AAP - Adrian Southwell is still haunted by the death of an 80-year-old friend and neighbour, killed when struck by his driverless, runaway van after a tow rope snapped.

The young man's remorse over his role in the death of Edith May Bennett today saved him from more serious punishment when ordered to perform 500 hours of community work.

Outside court Southwell, 24, convicted of manslaughter by criminal negligence, spoke of his friendship with the victim whom he had chatted with minutes before the tragic accident.
