This is TALK OF THE NATION/SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow.
Artificial corneas have been around for a while, but until now they
were made of various materials--mostly plastics--that didn't really
do a great job of mimicking the human cornea. Well, now scientists
led by a team at the University of Ottawa have created the first artificial
cornea made from human cells that mimics a human cornea. Is this
cornea good enough to use as a transplant in people? That's one of
