History

Land was purchased for the Calvary Cemetery at Cash Corner in 1855. Bishop David W. Bacon, the first Roman Catholic bishop of Portland, consecrated the land in 1858. The first burial took place on the same day.

Mount Calvary Chapel was built in 1860, the second-oldest church in Portland. In 1910 The Rev. Timothy H. Houlihan offered the first Sunday worship there.

In 1926 the chapel was upgraded to serve as a parish for residents of Cash Corner, Ligonia, Pleasantdale Park and the Thornton Heights district of South Portland as well as parts of ...
