For the last 10 years, the Philadelphia band The Roots has sought
alternative to the lock-step beats and thug rhetoric of hip-hop.
They play instruments rather than relying on a deejay. And on their
new disk, "Phrenology," their collaborations with Jill Scott, Nelly
Furtado, poet Amiri Baraka and others venture far from the typical
rap blueprint. Critic Tom Moon has a review.
