Philip Morris USA has agreed to give $17.6 million to North Carolina
State University to map out the genetic makeup of tobacco, the school
announced Wednesday.
The Tobacco Genome Initiative would be carried out over a 4 1/2-year
period by North Carolina. State's College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences. North Carolina. State researchers say mapping out tobacco'
s genes could lead to engineering the leaf for alternative uses.
It is believed that tobacco has between 25,000 and 50,000 genes.
