Dateline: NEW YORK Barnes & Noble Inc. Thursday said it agreed to buy Sterling Publishing Co., a publisher of how-to books, for an undisclosed amount.

In a news release Thursday, Barnes & Noble said the deal will boost sales and earnings.

Sterling, based in New York, publishes 1,000 new titles annually and has 4,500 titles in print.
