An Algerian Islamic party said a man being held in a top security
New Zealand jail is seeking asylum and denied media reports he has
links to the al-Qaida terror network.
In a written statement Friday, the Europe-based Islamic Salvation
Front Consultative Council confirmed a one-time senior member, Ahmed
Zaoui, was being held in New Zealand.
Authorities in the South Pacific nation were Saturday still trying
to confirm his identity and have not released his name.
Immigration Minister Lianne Dalziel has said he is being held because
of unspecified security concerns.
