Troubled South Pacific nations such as the Solomon Islands are potential
targets for destabilization attempts by terrorist groups, the Australian
and New Zealand foreign ministers said Sunday.
While it is unlikely that the al-Qaida terror network or the Southeast
Asian extremist Islamic group Jemaah Islamiyah would base themselves
in the South Pacific, terrorist organizations will always look for
opportunities to create chaos in other countries, Australian Foreign
Minister Alexander Downer said.
His New Zealand counterpart, Phil Goff, said a troubled state in the
South Pacific would give terrorist organizations a chance to gain
