THE National Environment Board Wednesday resolved to ban farming of
black-tiger prawns in fresh water areas, Deputy Science Minister Pornthep
Tejapaibul said.
About 870 farmers who have invested in the in-land black-tiger prawn
farms would be given a grace period of four months before being asked to
halt the business, Pornthep said.
He said the NEB would soon submit a request to Prime Minister Chuan
Leekpai to invoke the 1992 Environment Act and issue an order to ban in-
land black-tiger prawn farming.
A Fishery Department survey has found that 872 farmers had dug ponds
in land over 10,000 rai to farm black-tiger prawns. They had ...
