The captain of the oil tanker that sank and caused a massive oil spill
in northwestern Spain criticized Spanish authorities refusing to allow
the ship to dock once it began leaking, a local newspaper reported
Saturday.
"The Spanish authorities sent it (the tanker) further out to sea,
and there, the hole got a lot bigger," Apostolos Mangouras, captain
of the ship Prestige, was quoted as saying in the regional daily La
Voz de Galicia.
"It was a mistake to order the ship out to sea, it should have been
taken to a quiet place where the cargo could have been offloaded,"
he said.
