The jailed Greek captain of the sunken oil tanker Prestige claimed
the doomed vessel had been in "perfect condition" before sinking,
he said in a newspaper interview published Wednesday.
"I believe something struck the ship. Perhaps it was a container or
a powerful wave. This created a crack causing the ship to list 25
to 30 degrees," Apostolos Mangouras told the Athens daily Ta Nea.
"Within 10 minutes, 10,000 tons of water flooded the ship from the
right ballast. The tanker was in perfect condition and very well maintained."
The single-hulled Prestige, carrying 77,000 tons of oil, sank in November
