Abortion is the termination of pregnancy, especially when deliberately induced. Until 1988, under the Canadian Criminal Code, an attempt to induce an abortion by any means was a crime. The maximum penalty was life imprisonment, or 2 years if the woman herself was convicted. Amendments introduced in 1969 exempted from prosecution physicians who induced the miscarriage of a fetus under certain conditions.
