Ali Shiham netted a brilliant hat trick Saturday to help the Maldives
trounce Bhutan 6-0 in the first round of the South Asian soccer championship
while Bangladesh defeated Nepal 1-0 in another match.
The Maldives, led by striker Ali Umar, dominated with four goals in
the first half at Bangabandhu National Stadium. The 10-day tournament
features eight nations from the region.
The Bhutanese were playing just their sixth international match after
getting FIFA membership in 2000. Their only victory was on June 30,
2002 _ the same day Brazil won its fifth World Cup by beating Germany
2-0 in Yokohama, Japan _ when they beat Montserrat 4-0.
