Vic: Law body warns against unqualified legal advice
MELBOURNE, Jan 12 AAP - A sharp increase in complaints about so-
called "bush lawyers"
has prompted the Law Institute of Victoria to issue a warning to consumers.
Institute president Bill O'Shea said the organisation received
107 complaints about
unqualified people giving legal advice last year - up from 54 complaints
in 1996.
Mr O'Shea said the institute was putting those people on notice
that they would be
investigated and prosecuted if appropriate.
"Apart from being a criminal offence carrying a significant penalty,
the unqualified
person giving legal advice more often than not gets it ...
