Dateline: BASEL, Switzerland The world economy is expected to recover _ slowly _ in 2003, albeit at a very subdued pace, the head of the Bank of England said Monday after a meeting with other top central bankers.

Eddie George said the United States economy could grow by some 3 percent this year, while the European Union's 12-nation euro zone could reach 2.5 percent. The two are the world's largest economies.
