This is TALK OF THE NATION. I'm Neal Conan in Washington.
Five hundred years ago the Duke of Milan received a long letter from
a man applying for a job as a military engineer. At the end he tacked
on a postscript. `In peace,' he wrote, `I believe I could give you
as complete satisfaction as anyone on the construction of buildings,
both public and private. I can further execute sculpture in marble,
bronze or clay. And in painting, I can do as much as anyone, whoever
he may be.'
