Dateline: SEOUL, South Korea The United States came under increased international pressure Friday to open direct discussions with North Korea to end an intensifying nuclear standoff.

South Korea's president-elect encouraged Washington to "engage actively in dialogue," while a top Russian envoy said the crisis was an issue to be resolved primarily between the United States and North Korea.

A North Korean official said only the United States could solve the problem.

Washington has been canvassing allies to pressure North Korea into scrapping nuclear weapons programs.
