The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, once the laughingstock of the NFL, routed
the Oakland Raiders 48-21 in the Super Bowl, sparked by a fearsome
defense, a suddenly dynamic offense and a coach who brought the final
fiery touch.
"For all this franchise has been through, nothing could be sweeter,
" veteran safety John Lynch said Sunday. "Super Bowl champs. Wow!"
It was the Buccaneers' first appearance in the championship game since
their 1976 debut _ and it was a dominating performance.
Their No. 1-ranked defense held Oakland, the league's No. 1-ranked
offense, to 62 yards and three first downs in the first half, which
ended 20-3.
