Belgium's backing for Germany and France in one of the worst crises
in NATO's 53 years shows just how closely the nation is aligned with
France, as well as its unusual status as both NATO's home and one
of its more pacifist members.
The tiny country incurred the anger of the United States this week
when it joined France and Germany in blocking NATO efforts to help
Turkey prepare for possible counterattacks from Iraq.
Germany and France have grabbed headlines with their fierce opposition
to war, Belgium less so. But Brussels-Paris unity is seen here as
a good thing, despite the risk of a split in NATO.
