Associated Press reporter Michael Luo won a 2002 George Polk Journalism
Award for his series questioning the confessions and manslaughter
convictions of three mentally retarded defendants in Alabama. The
New York Times and The Boston Globe were each double winners.
Luo's three-part series drew national attention to the case in Butler,
Alabama, and led to the release of two defendants; the third is in
prison for an unrelated crime. Luo, a national writer for the AP,
was honored in the criminal justice category.
The 14 Polk winners were announced Monday by Long Island University,
