Qld: American the latest in a string of tourist drowning deaths

BRISBANE, Feb 24 AAP - A 68-year-old American tourist has become the latest in a string of drowning fatalities involving tourists in Australia.

The man, from Florida, was believed to have suffered a heart attack while snorkelling with his wife during a trip to the Great Barrier Reef off Cairns yesterday afternoon.

The couple had been with a party of divers and snorkellers at Briggs Reef when the woman found her husband floating unconscious around 2.30pm.

He was pulled from the water and rushed to a moored pontoon but efforts to revive him failed.
