Dateline: NEW YORK Random House Inc. on Thursday named Daniel Menaker as senior vice president and editor-in-chief within the Random House Ballantine Publishing Group, replacing the executive it fired last month for not making the company profitable enough.

Menaker is a highly respected editor who has worked at Random House, HarperCollins and The New Yorker. He will head the Random House editorial imprint, which includes Villard, the Modern Library and Random House Trade Paperbacks.
